Braiding was one of the original techniques used in making fishing lines, traditionally using fibers such as cotton and linen and sometimes silk. These fabrics are not the most durable for use in constantly wet conditions, and subsequently braided lines faded out of fashion as technology brought us nylon monofilament. Monofilament fishing lines are made out of plastic polymers and are much more durable in the water.

Monofilament lines are cheap and easy to make and depending on the polymers used can give varying different tensile strength and visibilities in water. They are thin and highly durable but have a downside in that they have an elastic property causing the line to stretch and kink, which can have some negative impacts for bite detection and casting. Modern-day braided fishing lines are making a comeback.

They are now made from man-made materials such as polymer-based plastics, woven to form a super strong braid. New braided lines tend to have 1/3 to a 1/4 of the thickness of monofilament fishing lines with the same tensile strength. This has a significant impact on the performance of the line and also the ability to fit larger quantities onto a reel, making it easier for long-range casting.

Braided lines also have a much higher abrasion resistance than monofilament lines meaning they are perfect for fishing around snags and weeds or lakes with gravel bottoms. Due to the braided construction, it also means that lines have minimal stretch which ensures ideal bite indication and a fantastic solid feel when connecting with a fish. There are of course some downsides to braided lines, although the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

For example, braided lines tend to be more visible in the water, and they’re not as easy to tie a secure knot or trim the excess line where required, due to their robust construction. Although braided lines can be used on both spinning and casting equipment, the real benefits of braided lines can be felt with the casting setup. Let’s look at some of the best braided fishing lines.

Best Braided Fishing Lines Reviews

KastKing Superpower Braided Fishing Line

KastKing is a quality American manufacturer committed to driving forward innovation at an affordable price and are the winner of an I-cast Best of Show award.

They are a manufacturer of products that sell directly to the consumer, cutting out the middleman to ensure you get a quality product for an affordable price. The Kastking superpower braided fishing line is a top-quality line using dynamically incorporated strands to provide a super high tensile strength for a reduced braid diameter.

These lines are designed for improved casting distance and are coated with a proprietary treatment that helps the line pass through the line guards without using a wax coating. This process also improves knot strength, giving you peace of mind that your rigs will be strong enough when you hit the big fish.

The Kastking superpower braided line has a low memory which ensures casting performance and prevents the line from spooling, reducing tangles. Its construction also improves abrasion resistance making their line durable in all fishing conditions both freshwater and saltwater.

Available in tensile strength from 6 lbs. all the way up to 150 lbs. and available in five different colors, there is a choice for every angling condition. Lines ranging from 6 to 65 lbs. incorporate a four-strand braid with braided line rated 65 lbs. to 150 lbs. utilizing an eight-strand construction for extra strength.

  • Strong knot strength
  • Enhanced cast distance
  • High tensile strength for diameter
  • Zero stretch

  • No lower tensile strengths available

PowerPro Spectra Fiber Braided Fishing Line

PowerPro produces its braided fishing line using a proprietary spectra fiber. They claim this gives an advantage over monofilament and also competitive super braids, due to a patented process in its manufacturing. PowerPro spectra fiber braided fishing line has been treated with the process called “enhanced body technology” which ensures a smoother, rounder, slicker line.

This improves casting properties and also performance and presentation in the water across all angling categories, including fly fishing, spinning, and baitcasting. The PowerPro spectra fiber braided fishing line comes in tensile strength of 3 lbs. all the way through to 150 lbs. braking strain. Spool sizes range from 150 yards through to 3000 yards.

It is available in moss green, hi-vis yellow, vermilion red, and white.

  • Good range of tensile strength
  • Spectra Fiber is Ultra Strong
  • Enhanced body technology for extra smooth finish
  • Enhanced water performance

  • Limited to 4 colors

Handing Braided Fishing Line, 8 Strand Super Strong PE Fishing Line

Handing is a Chinese-based professional fishing manufacturer committed to producing quality products that deliver value and price. Handing braided fishing line uses a construction method of eight strands of PE fibers making this product durable yet still affordable. It has been treated during manufacturing to give a smooth finish which reduces friction during casting as well as excellent abrasion resistance in any water.

Due to the eight-strand construction, it has virtually zero stretch making it super sensitive and Powerful. Available in strengths from 18 lbs. to 96 lbs., it puts this line firmly into Big Fish category. Color options are grey, blue-green, multi-colored and yellow, giving an option for any angling method.

  • Eight strand fiber improves strength
  • Reduced friction for increased casting
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Zero stretch, sensitive and powerful
  • Good range of color

  • Basic PE fibers.
  • Lack of low tensile strengths available

All three of our braided fishing lines we have reviewed today would be fit for purpose. Your target fish and angling methods would determine your choice across some of these braided lines. The Powerpro spectra Fiber is the only line with low tensile strength variations suitable for smaller, more delicate fishing.

Handing does not offer any options under 18 lbs. making this line only ideal for Big Fish outings. The pick of the bunch would be the KastKing superpower. This offers some fantastic new technology and performance with fine line diameters and high performance at a midway price.
